Honoring Moms This Mother’s Day—In Memory and Celebration
Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate the women who shape our lives with strength, compassion, and love. But for some of us, it’s also a tender reminder of who’s no longer here.
Five years ago this August, I lost my mom to cancer. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss her. She was my best friend, my comfort, and the heart of our family. Every Mother’s Day since has felt different—but over time, I’ve learned that grief and joy can exist together. I can celebrate with my kids while still honoring the beautiful woman who raised me.
Whether you’re celebrating your mom, being a mom, or remembering one, here are a few heartfelt ways to make Mother’s Day meaningful this year in Fort Myers:
🌿 1. Bake a Favorite Family Dessert
One of my favorite memories is baking brownies with my mom and always getting to lick the bowl. Now, my kids help me stir the batter—and yes, they get to lick the bowl too. Bringing back little traditions like this helps me feel close to her, and it creates new memories for my own children. Pick a recipe that reminds you of your mom and bake it together.
🌸 2. Spend Time in Nature
Fort Myers is full of peaceful spots to reflect or reconnect with loved ones. Take a stroll through the gardens at Edison & Ford Winter Estates, enjoy the butterfly house at Lakes Park, or sit quietly at Bunche Beach Preserve. Nature can be healing, especially on emotional days.
💐 3. Pick Up Fresh Flowers from a Local Truck
Wild at Heart Flower Truck is Fort Myers’ original mobile flower bar and always adds a special touch to the day. You can build your own bouquet or pick up one of their gorgeous pre-made bundles. Perfect for gifting—or remembering a mom who’s no longer with you.
✝️ 4. Light a Candle or Say a Prayer
If your mom is in heaven like mine, take time to reflect. Light a candle. Read a verse that brings you peace—Psalm 23 was my mom’s favorite and still comforts me: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life…” Write a letter to her, or talk to her while you take a walk. Her memory still matters. She still matters.
🛍️ 5. Celebrate Another Mom
If you’re missing your mom, consider celebrating someone else—a friend, aunt, neighbor, or sister. Invite them to lunch, write them a note, or offer to help watch their kids. Encouraging another mom can be a beautiful way to honor the love you were given.
🍽️ 6. Support Local Mom-Owned Businesses
Show love to moms in our community by visiting local, mom-owned spots:
Seed & Bean Market: Fort Myers’ first cannabis café and marketplace, also serving amazing coffee and food.
Downtown Coffee and Wine Company: A charming café in Bonita Springs offering espresso, wine, and small bites in a cozy atmosphere.
Wicked Streatery: A Fort Myers food truck with bold flavors and great vibes—check their Facebook for their current location.
🎨 7. Make a "Why We Love Mom" Jar
Let your kids fill a jar with notes about why they love Mom or Grandma. These tiny handwritten messages turn into keepsakes that will be treasured for years. Add in Bible verses, drawings, or small trinkets to make it extra special.
🌿 8. Explore the Alliance for the Arts GreenMarket
Spend a relaxed Saturday morning at the Alliance for the Arts GreenMarket. With fresh produce, handmade goods, live music, and local art, it’s a fun way to treat Mom while supporting Fort Myers makers.
🕊️ 9. Make Room for Your Emotions
It’s okay if this day brings tears. It’s okay to feel joy and grief in the same breath. Mother’s Day isn’t about perfection—it’s about love. However you spend it, know that your feelings are valid. If you’re missing your mom like I am, you’re not alone.
This Mother’s Day, may you feel seen, supported, and surrounded by love—both past and present. Whether you’re baking brownies with your kids or lighting a candle in memory, know that your mom’s love lives on through you.
From my family to yours—Happy Mother’s Day, Fort Myers.
