Description
Process art is an artistic approach that prioritizes the journey of creation over the final outcome. The emphasis is on the steps involved in making the art, such as collecting, organizing, or arranging materials, which become integral to the artwork itself, or sometimes even the central theme.
Every Monday and Tuesday, your tween or teen will embark on an artistic journey where the creation process takes center stage, resulting in stunning art pieces as a natural byproduct of their exploration and experimentation. We'll focus on projects that require multiple steps, emphasizing the act of making art while introducing new tools and techniques along the way.
Class 1: Sunset Mosaic on Canvas
Students will start by painting a base layer of a sunset on a canvas. They will then glue mosaic pieces in various hues to completely cover the canvas. To enhance the process, a premixed sealing solution will be applied, possibly in different colors, to fill in the gaps and complete the mosaic effect.
Class 2: Salvador Dali-Inspired Clay Clocks
After a brief introduction to Salvador Dali and surrealism, students will explore the concept of “melted” clocks seen in many of his famous works. They'll have the opportunity to shape and mold their own clocks, adding intricate details like clock hands and frames to create depth. Once sculpted, students will paint their creations.
Class 3: Aluminum Foil Art
Students will start by sketching a design of their choice on a sturdy board. They will then glue yarn over their pencil lines, creating a raised outline. The entire board will be covered with heavy-duty aluminum foil, carefully smoothed over the design. The raised areas will stand out, and students can use Sharpies to color portions of their drawing.
Class 4: Cardboard Pop Art
Students will conceptualize a scene and its key elements, discussing background, foreground, and the main subject. They will then cut the scene into layers using cardboard, paint each piece, and glue them together to create a multi-dimensional pop art piece.
Class 5: Cut-Out Paper Art
Given a simple prompt like "sun and moon" or "day and night," students will draw a scene that represents these ideas. They will then use an X-Acto knife to cut out the negative spaces in their design. If time allows, they can layer their images and add a background for additional depth.
Class 6: Paper Clip Art
Students will choose a famous artwork as a reference (e.g., "Starry Night"). Using various colored paper clips, they will recreate the artwork by arranging the clips to match the original as closely as possible. Once satisfied with their placement, they will glue the paper clips down.
Class 7: Process Painting
This class is for those who don’t mind getting a little messy! Students will paint in rounds, using unconventional methods and following a timed sequence to add an element of spontaneity to their creations.
Class 8: Fruit Prints
Students will learn the best techniques for creating prints using halved fruits. The challenge will be to create patterns or original images solely from fruit prints.
Class 9: Hole Punch Art
Students will select a well-known artwork as a reference and recreate it using construction paper and a hole puncher, mimicking the pointillism technique. The challenge lies in matching colors accurately and placing the punched dots in the right spots, like assembling a puzzle.
Class 10: Reverse Drawing / Oil Pastel Prints
Students will cover a sheet of paper with oil pastels, using various colors and thinking strategically about their placement. They will then draw a subject of their choice on a separate sheet placed over the oil pastel layer. This process will create an imprint on both the pastel-covered sheet and the top paper, resulting in a unique dual print.
